It's All About Your Lifestyle!

"Having more things than we know what to do with may be a sign of a wealthy society and a prosperous family. And yet, there are so many people in our world that do not even have the bare necessities. Looked at from that point of view, downsizing and distributing your belongings, and limiting yourself to what you really need and love, can truly be a shared blessing."

-Vickie Dellaquila, Don't Toss My Memories in the Trash

Why are people downsizing?

  • Today's young professionals want to be able to travel, vacation, and pursue hobbies without worrying about other stuff. They hire people to do yard work and house work, maintain the pool, etc. They choose to spend their free time and expendable income enjoying all that life has to offer.
  • This demographic is used to the condo, apartment, and townhouse lifestyle. They are not as "house proud" and will be more likely to live in communities that offer these care-free lifestyles.

  • Adults are more changeable today than they were 20 years ago. Technological advances alone have made many items expendable.
  • Our parents had one TV for 10 years, we buy new ones every 5 years.
  • Baby Boomers - tomorrows "Seniors" - are less frugal and less emotional about the past. They did not live through the Great Depression.
  • Family connections are tenuous and long-distance travel keeps families farther apart. Valuable family possessions are sold instead of being "kept in the family"
  • eBay, "the digital auction block" has become a clearing house for families personal items - items too much trouble to keep but too valuable not to sell.

Tips for staying organized:

  • Sort through your things from time-to-time, dispose of unnecessary items via charities, internet sales techniques or to specific people.
  • Digitally save photos, movies and music. Scan memorabilia and save it on disks.
  • Don't abide by "One man's junk is another man's treasure" rule.
  • Don't store your children's things once they move out - send it with them.
  • If you truly value something, store it in a manner where it won't be ruined.

Three good reasons to Keep It Under Control:

  1. It will be easier on YOUR children and loved ones when it comes time for you to move. What a wonderful gift to them!
  2. YOUR life will be easier to maintain, less stressful and well-ordered.
  3. Efficiency is key - you'll have more time to do what you LOVE when you don't have so much to take care of!
